I want as much work as I can get, the more high profile the better. This will hopefully stop me playing Solitaire and get me into the of working 24/7.

So I have also had some other work going on during this module that could come under the banner of ’competition and commission’.
———————————————————————————————————–

First there is a website that is being developed by myself and Miranda Thorne (Yr3).
Hay Splitty link.
Miranda built the flat design for this site and I built the WordPress theme to make it work.
There is a little bit of work left to go but it is ready for the client to see.

———————————————————————————————————–

I have also taken it upon myself to help with the design of the college magazine ‘Palette’.
I am currently in the process of doing a complete re-design and working on things to get it better attention from fellow students.
I have received a lot of help on the layout from Jake Loveday, sending him mock’s and getting good feedback, also Tim Breeze had some very good point’s.
There is also a website in the pipelines that I will be a major part of.

Dev done so far

———————————————————————————————————–

I am also in contact with Grace Gallagher about building a WordPress theme for ZINE ZINE
I have started on preliminary sketch designs since Grace sent me a basic mock-up of the idea’s that she has for the site, hopefully we will meet up soon to go through exactly what is required.

For this project we had to handle the production of work and management of a shop for all year 2 graphic and media students.

——————————————————————————————————————–

We started off by coming up with a name for the shop, this ended up taking far too long to decide, finally opting for ‘Pop It Up’ which was a good compromise and, I feel, a good name for a pop up shop.
Next we all produced a poster for the shop.
This is the idea that I came up with, I only spent about an hour putting it together which is why it isn’t that great, should have put a bit of colour in. When producing it I was thinking about some of the fluorescent club posters that get fly posted, simple black on colour.
In the end we went with the poster that Abby produced.
It works really well, it’s very eye-catching and gets the name out there, the only thing I feel that could have been a little better is the detail about where the shop was going to be, a bit more emphasis on it being at Art 360.

Once the poster was done and dusted we could all go into overdrive, getting the advertising and marketing of the shop started.
I took care of all the web stuff, I got a twitter page (it didn’t get utilized as much as it should have) and a facebook group page setup.
I also took care of re-working the poster for a facebook header, the twitter page background, the studentnet carousel and the college tv network (this was basically just resizing the poster).

Pop It Up – FaceBook Banner

Pop It Up – StudentNet Banner

Abby and myself took up the reins of contacting people at the college about getting the advertising sorted out, Dee Montague being a critical part of all of this, helping to get things out to newspapers like the Hereford Times and on the student Union and college facebook feeds.

Jake and myself went out the Wednesday before the shop opened to drop posters at other local businesses, we covered the bottom end of Hereford up to High Town and got a very positive response. Others did offer to cover area’s closer to them (folley and commercial area) but when it came to it they didn’t come in to get posters or details of where to go which was disappointing.

——————————————————————————————————————–
Producing the work for the shop turned into a bit of a ball ache.

The cards were relatively straight forward to produce, I have had the guide since summer 2012 and knew that I could use it somehow for the shop, the canvases for the prints I started to produced from the beginning the Christmas break and this helped me get the idea for the card cover.
The bags …..
This is where things started to get a bit more difficult, the initial base colour for the three monkeys went through the screen print with not to many problems, there were some uneven prints but it added to the hand-made feel but after that I’m guessing I didn’t clean the screen properly and the black either bleed through the stencil or didn’t come through enough.

These are some of the efforts that didn’t work very well.

——————————————————————————————————————–

The running of the shop went really well and most people did their part when needed. One thing i think that some didn’t realize is that they could have just taken on some of the things to do rather than wait to be asked to do it, also some follow through of idea’s would have helped.
It was a very good learning exercise for what it is like to exhibit/sell work in a group, I have done something similar before but that was on my own and a lot easier to manage as I only had myself to be accountable for.

We received a lot of good feedback (I don’t feel that the comments about anyone being ‘disinterested’ are not very accurate, we were all very inviting when customers came in and happy to talk to them, we did have some long periods of no customers and it might have taken some to either perk up or get in the groove of someone walking in but everyone took it seriously, it is sometimes easy to forget that a headphone ear bud is in your ear, especially when not listening to anything.) both from people who visited the shop and from comments online.

Our commission based brief of this module, We were given the task of creating a family based guide for the Time Will Tell exhibition at Croft Castle in Herefordshire.

Our commission based brief of this module, We were given the task of creating a family based guide for the Time Will Tell exhibition at Croft Castle in Herefordshire.

————————————————————————————-

Unfortunately this project probably didn’t get the time it needed to produce something brilliant due to getting prepared for the shop and the brief was a little tricky to decipher exactly what they wanted.

Again one of the first things that I did was go through some of my own books, looking at poster layout’s and colour combinations.

I really like the use of colour in these four examples and the use of solid lines in the fourth.

I also spent some time going through the meadow arts website to find images of the castle itself and any of the grounds.

————————————————————————————-

As my thinking was that the brief was asking for the leaflet to be solely aimed at children (6-12 yr was decided in the meeting) this is what I based my initial design one.

These are some of my first layout dev’s.

Very basic but they show the direction that I was going in.
————————————————————————————-
Below is the final layout for the colourful leaflet that I submitted.

I know there are some issues with the layouts above and I may revisit this at some point, time got the better of me to get things really refined but I feel it show’s good progress with my idea’s and modern layout.
I did create a second layout but it was very rushed and not really worth sharing with the world.
————————————————————————————-

I tried to push myself a lot more with the layout on this module and in the end wasn’t really designing for the brief but for myself.
I am fairly happy with the outcome of the coloured line leaflet, had I given myself more time on it I know I could have really refined it and made it look a lot better.
Also I shouldn’t have done the test prints on A4 as this threw me off on the sizing. I could have made everything quite a lot smaller and put much more content into it.

The classic coloured leaflet was a very last-minute thing, I basically did it to have a version with all of the copy in and it shows that it has been rushed.

For this project we have been given a competition brief to produce design’s for the signage system that will be going into a new building for all HCA Degree courses at the start of the 2013/2014 year.
—————————————————————————————————————

Some of the things I started looking at.

I went through a few of my own books, ‘Cult-ure by Rian Hughes‘ and ’100 Ideas that changed Graphic Design by Steven Heller and Veronique Vienne’.
I also looked at the tube map, this is always the first port of call when looking at signage systems.
The Cult-Ure index is a good example of how information systems can be fun. The fact that it appears on page 160 of the book show’s just how outside of the box the book is. Also the use of colour to section things is something that is going to be an important factor of what I’m going to produce but at this stage I am not sure as to how it is going to be implemented.
The Olivetti poster by Giovanni Pintori caught my eye, I really like the ‘bouncy’ nature of the colour, it is something that needs to be in signage for an art college. Also the use of colour and line form on some of the other posters produced (see the link) for olivetti are really appealing to me for this project.

—————————————————————————————————————

Ideas that I have been working on include running thin coloured lines either along the wall, along the floor or along the ceiling, kind of like the underground system.

A signage system for an art college not only needs to innovative but also vibrant and exciting. The images above show some interesting idea’s, the last making me think that large type is definitely a way to go. I also really like how the type running along the ceiling looks but this might be going a little bit too far.

I am also trying to work out how technology could be incorporated into a signage system, at the moment I’m thinking about QR codes linking to a mobile map with directions to relevant department on the screen.
—————————————————————————————————————

IdN v17n5: Wayfinding+Signage – The Wayfinders
I found an edition of IdN online that focuses on Signage and Way Finding, thankfully it has all the articles online and there is some really interesting stuff highlighted.

—————————————————————————————————————

One of the first things that I did was produce a type list to work out what would be best to use.
I’m quite happy that people preferred Neo Sans because this is the one that I wanted to use as it is the HCA logo and publication font and I wanted that consistency to follow through into the signage.

—————————————————————————————————————
This was the style that I came up with.
The main course name would be from the floor to the ceiling to give an idea of the scale, as would most other markings like floor numbers in a stairwell and toilets etc.
Also the slanted style would carry across to all signage.
This would be the signage style for elsewhere in the building, either large vinyl wrap on the wall or on an aluminium plate. Of course it would only display the relevant course or area (like cafeteria or bar) with arrows to show directions were needed.
—————————————————————————————————————

I’m very happy with the outcome of this project. I feel the proposed signage could work really well if the scale is maintained and also helps to affirm the idea that it is slightly quirky in an art college.

I am also very happy with how I have presented my proposed signage ideas, I received a lot of very good feedback and I hope that it demonstrates how much I am enjoying using InDesign.

In the end I think that by not having photo’s of inside the building it allowed me to do a better job as once we did get the photo’s it did not help towards generating ideas at all.

People all over the world are still struggling with the aftermath of the greatest financial crisis since the Wall Street Crash of 1929. We all know what the effects have been but what exactly were the causes? The Flaw ranges widely across the history of American capitalism in the twentieth century, its rigor laced with sardonic humor and peopled with a cast of characters that spans Nobel-prize winning economists and distressed home owners to the New York Times financial correspondent on the brink of foreclosure and the Wall Street banker who feels the pain encoded in his spreadsheets. The film argues that the roots of the crisis lie in the changing relationship between the rich and the rest in American society

Annoyingly I missed this session, bad weather and broken internet keep me from college but I have since been able to get the brief and get some work done for it.

Not going to be able to put anything in for part 1 but I have been able to produce something for part 2.

After going through the brief I interpreted that we had to create a modern example for on of the three films listed.
I went for Chinatown because I have seen it and it is a great film.

As soon as I did a bit of searching for information the cover for Chinatown Wars popped up and I thought it might work well to try and mimic the idea.

As soon as I started working on it things really clicked and came together very quickly without a great deal of development (this I know is going to go against me) and the final outcome I feel is very good.
The key to this working was getting the typeface right, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be find the correct font and with a little bit of editing to some of the descenders it matched up perfectly.

My general thinking behind this design is to enable people, mainly 15 and above, to relate to the modern style of the grand theft auto cover design and to entice them them to go and see a film from 1974 that they would not have considered seeing before. Also to get them to find out about some of the other films that are showing.

So we had a great session today creating logo’s from cuttings of other, older logo’s.
I feel I did quite well with the days session and it was only hostility from one in the group that meant that I got a negative point.

We were given random letter’s to start with and had to represent or recreate them, then we created a logo for ourselves and the we were given a random word. For the final exercise we had to create an amalgamation from all or any of the previous creations.

Below is the mornings work, neatly arranged on one sheet.

For part 2 we had a create a logo/identity for a fiction company.

Network Electric

These are the logo’s that I created and the top left is the one that I choose as my final logo.

Three quick mock ups to show the logo in action, A business card, letter head and Transit van.

I also did a quick mock up of a transit with my second choice of logo on.
I really enjoyed this project as logo creation is something that I have always had a knack for.

IMDB’s summery for this film is “Noted Celebrity Photographer, Michael Grecco, sets out to capture the essence of the AVN Awards and Convention where the best in American Pornography is displayed, celebrated and honored.”

An intriguing look at the Academy Awards for porn but with a tasteful slant, Michael Grecco makes it into a bit of an underdog tale with an unhappy ending.
